Hacked Lightning Cables Can Allow an Attacker To Take Over Your Mac

Next time you plug in a random Lightning cable to your iPhone or iPad to transfer data from your Mac, think again. The creator of O.MG cable has confirmed that these cables can be mass-produced in a factory and that the original version was not a one-off.
The O.MG cable looks just like a genuine Lightning cable from Apple but it will let you remotely take over a computer. While the cable can also be used for charging and data transfer purposes, its main intent is to allow a hacker to connect to a computer.
MG is the creator of the O.MG Cable. It charges phones and transfers data in the same way an Apple cable does, but it also contains a wireless hotspot that a hacker can connect to. Once they’ve done that, a hacker can run commands on the computer, potentially rummaging through a victim’s files, for instance.
The cable was first demoed by MG at the Def Con hacking conference earlier this year. At that time, the creator was selling handmade versions of the cable for $200 apiece.
After months of work, I am now holding the very first fully manufactured #OMGCable. I can’t wait to get these up on

Now time for a fully destructive teardown to make sure they meet all my requirements for a fully field-ready piece of attack hardware.

Now that it has been confirmed that the O.MG cables can be mass produced, MG will put them up for sale on Hak5, a company that’s known for selling hacking tools. Once the O.MG cables are ready, you can purchase them from the Hak5 store.
Will you buy a hacked O.MG cable? Do you think such a cable should be mass-produced and sold?Tips:Recover Photos, Videos, Contacts, Messages, Notes, Call History & Calendar from iPhone. Apple Now Offering Free Data Migration When You Buy a New Mac or Get a Repair

Apple Now Offering Free Data Migration When You Buy a New Mac or Get a Repair

Handling data migration can be quick and easy, or a relatively long process depending on the individual. Up to this point, Apple has charged to handle that on its own. But now, the company has dropped the fee for folks buying a new Mac or getting a repair.

TidBits was first with the report on Tuesday. The publication states that Apple has dropped the fee it used to charge to handle data migration for customers. Up to this point, Apple would charge $99 to migrate data from an old Mac to a new model purchased by a customer. The new change was implemented earlier this month, and is now live across Apple’s physical retail stores.

An Apple Store Operations Specialist confirmed the change to policy:

“Beginning April 2, there will be no cost for Data Migrations with the purchase of a new Mac or Data Transfers with a repair.”

Depending on the individual and the amount of information they have/want to transfer, this is a process that can take a bit of time. With that in mind, if you do plan on doing a data migration for a new laptop, or as part of an out-of-warranty repair, make sure you’ve carved out time in the day as needed.
Our Take

It’s good to see Apple make this change. Charging $100 is a bit of a steep price to migrate data, even if it does make the process a lot easier for customers who need that type of service.

2 Delete Old iCloud Backups

You can also try to delete the old iCloud backup on your device. Since iCloud automatically makes backups, you will find numerous backup files on your iCloud account and it is fine to delete the old backup. However, it is advisable to create a different backup either via iTunes or on your computer. Here are the steps on how to delete the old iCloud backup.

Go to Settings app on your device, then tap iCloud.

Click on Manage Storage and locate your device under the Backups section.

Locate the old backup and delete it from iCloud.

Go back to Settings > iCloud > Backup > and click on Back Up Now. If you are still unable to back up your device, then try other ways below.
3 Reset Network Settings

The iCloud backup mostly relies on the Wi-Fi and cellular data to perform automatic backups. This means that if the network settings are not working properly, you might fail to back up your device to iCloud. Therefore, the best way to rule out this problem is by resetting the network settings. Here is how:

Go to Settings on your device.

Click the General > Reset.

Then touch on Reset Network Settings or simply choose a different Wi-Fi network.

When you choose to reset the network, you will have to rejoin a new network. Once you have rejoined, you can go back to iCloud and try to back up your files once again.

4 Sign out and re-sign in iCloud

You can also try to sign out of your iCloud account and re-sign back in once again and see whether this fixes the issue. Probably, a simple signing out will do the trick.

Open settings > iCloud.

Scroll down to the bottom part of the interface.

Then click on Sign Out.

Wait for a few seconds or a minute and then sign in to your account once again.

Failure to back up your device means that you might easily lose your important data files. However, this might not be that you forgot to do it but it is because of “the last backup could not be completed” error on your device. The best method to fix this problem is by simply using iMyFone TunesMate program that is efficient and reliable in not only enabling you to back up your media files but to also bypass all the iTunes and iCloud restrictions. You may also like:Gihosoft Mobile Transfer: 1 Click Data Transfer from Phone to Phone

Fix whatsapp not showing contact names but number on iPhone X/8/7/6s

Fix whatsapp not showing contact names but number on iPhone X/8/7/6s

Many WhatsApp users feedback that the WhatsApp contact name disappeared, or they can't see WhatsApp contacts from outlook or other exchange account after installing the latest iOS 11.3. But those contacts are still in Apple contacts app.

It’s quite certain that this issue is caused by some changes in the iOS 11.3 and causing whatsapp contacts to not to load properly with names. Users have tried to refresh whatsapp contacts on iphone or verifying whatsapp access to contacts in settings, but there is no help from there as well and whatsapp notification is not showing name.

Fix 1: Add the contact or update the number to correct format

Since whatsapp is not showing names for few contacts, you can work on those contacts individually. Open whatsapp, tap the number of the contact (facing issue) on top of screen, then either create new contact or (if its already a contact) add to existing. If you are adding to existing, copy and paste the mobile number you are seeing on whatsapp into phone number while deleting the older one. (Please make sure it is in the international format or the one you are seeing in whatsapp). Now the contact name should appear fine in whatsapp.

Fix 2: Try Whatsapp recommendation

Whatsapp have also released its troubleshooting for -seeing numbers instead of contacts' names.

If your contacts' numbers are shown instead of their names, you may need to reset the WhatsApp sync with your contacts. Here is how:

1- Open your phone's Settings app > Accounts > WhatsApp.

2 -In the new screen, tap WhatsApp again > Menu Button > Remove account.

3 -Open WhatsApp > Contacts > Menu Button > Refresh.

Fix 3: Make sure contacts are accessible to whatsapp

If only newly added contacts are showing this issue, Go to Settings -> Privacy-> Contacts , make sure whatsapp setting is ON to read the contacts. If it is off the whatsapp cannot read the contacts of your iPhone and will show only contact number rather than contact name.

How to Use an iPhone for Absolutely Everything: Part 1

In just ten short years, the iPhone has had an incredible, irreversible even, effect on the way in which we conduct modern life. In this tutorial I'll show you how you can do anything with an iPhone. Well, almost anything.
The moniker iPhone doesn't really do justice to such an incredible device that gets thinner, more powerful and more capable by the year and sets the standard for an industry that it created. This is how to use an iPhone to do anything; this one, small, pocket-sized device replaces all of these things:

Landline telephone
Landline telephone (image source)

The iPhone itself was a revolutionary, touch-screen incarnation of a device—the mobile phone—that had existed as a consumer device for near on two decades beforehand. Mobile phones had largely been, well, large, clunky, basic and expensive and were used by many as an addition to one's landline.
With the advent of the smartphone, together with greater cellular device ownership, reduced cost and, now, Europe-wide roaming included within contracted data, minutes and texts, it is now increasingly likely that the iPhone is the primary—if not the only—telephone that someone is likely to use. Well, unless they have a separate work mobile.
The idea that a person must be tied to a location serviced by a pair of copper wires has become an anachronism that has left dinosaur telecommunications providers struggling to justify the use of such old infrastructure now that data services have largely moved to fibre-optic delivery.
By replacing a traditional landline telephone and service with an iPhone, you'll save around 1.3 kilogrammes, the space the device occupies, around £50 the device costs to buy and in the order of £204 per annum for a subscription service before any associated call costs.

Answer machine
Answer machine (image source)

It was the mid-90s when British Telecom introduced its 1571 call-answering service that freed subscribers from the need for a new telephone with integrated answer machine or a separate, chunky box that often contained a cassette tape onto which an outgoing message and incoming messages were recorded.
At the time this was futuristic.
Nowadays, if you're using an iPhone, you'll have an answer machine service operated by your mobile provider. With Apple's Visual Voicemail, the whole answer machine experience becomes much more intuitive.
No more dialling a number and pressing further numbers to navigate a restricted menu system.
Using an iPhone as an answering machine service, you'll save around £40 for the cost of the device, an electrical socket and the cost of powering it, the space it occupies or around £30 if you opt for the BT 1571 service.

Telephone kiosks Payphones
Telephone Kiosks (image source)

Some things the iPhone has replaced without your realising. Consider the last time that you used a public telephone kiosk, having to find the correct coins in order to use one, knowing the minimum charge or how much time you'll get to speak for a given price. Oh, that depends on the time of day, too. What a palaver.
For the 80th anniversary of the red telephone box, in October 2016, British Telecom reported that just 8,000 of the 46,000 public kiosks remaining are traditional red phone boxes, but this number is likely to reduce gradually in line with decreasing demand.
Using an iPhone will save you 60 pence, compared to a public telephone kiosk, each time you make a call. Many cellular network providers will give a certain number of inclusive minutes within a price plan or contract. These can now be used across a number of European countries meaning that an iPhone is not only more convenient, it's cheaper to use.

Address Book
Address Book (image source)

Time was when I could recall a number of long numbers, each one being a string of ten-digits. And I'd recall them all without error every time. They were, of course, regularly used telephone numbers of friends, family and work.

If you lost data after you updated to a new iPhone, you can always use Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery to get the data back from the old iPhone or backup. You may also like: iphonerecovery.comIf you use android phones, please choose Gihosoft Android Data Recovery.
Nowadays, many of us don't know the phone number for work, for our partner. Many people don't even know their own telephone number. The ability of mobile phones to store countless telephone numbers absolves our memories from the responsibility of the task.
Even my first Ericsson GH388 would store 99 numbers, ...provided that I laboriously entered them all first. An iPhone will import data already stored in an iCloud account, can receive numbers from .vcf virtual business cards, can be added from SMS messages, iMessage, other messaging services and can even be located in and added from incoming email. Effortlessly so.
Using an iPhone to manage all of your contacts will save you in the order of £13 on an address book weighing 300 grammes and there'll be no crossings out of old numbers. And the data will be backed up securely so there is no risk of losing it.
So far, I estimate that an iPhone has already saved you £337, a couple of kilogrammes and some shelf space.
This is just one in a series of tutorials showing you what is possible with an iPhone. The earlier tutorials cover some of the things that you may already know about; the later ones show you what is possible for some of the tasks you may not have considered.
